Questions and Answers
Q. How can I oil my hair without making it too heavy?
A. Oil the ends by holding your head down, comb hair forward, scoop a small amount of light oil, rub hands together and gently stroke hair from front to back.

Q. My hair is very long. How can I roll it for a comfortable nights sleep?
A. Comb your hair to the top of your head and place rollers there. Pin curl hair that falls.

Q. I can't sleep in rollers and "wraps" don't work for me. Is there another option?
A. Sure. Sleep on satin pillow cases. Roll hair before your morning shower and keep them in until you are ready to depart.

Q. How can I loosen tight curls?
A. Rub them with your palms. The heat will loosen them.

Q. My hair is not silky smooth. What can be done?
A. Every head of hair is different. It is possible that your hair was not relaxed properly. Have a professional analyze your hair for the possibile need of a corrective relaxer. Beyond that, condition, condition and condition.

Q. I prefer blow-dry styles, but my hair looks healthier after a wet set. What's your advice?
A. Have your stylist wet set your hair then blow it with a cool to warm dryer. You will have bounce and plenty of body.

Q. How can I get rid of the chemical smell that follows a color service?
A. Put a few tablespoons of ketchup in a bowl of warm water stir and then apply to hair. Fifteen minutes later, shampoo and condition.

Q. You are in the shower, ready to shave your legs and are out of shave cream. What do you do?
A. Use hair conditioner.

Q. Sometimes my hair gets flyaway ends. What can I do?
A. A super quick fix is to rub your static-charged hair with a fabric softener and whip those strands in shape.

Q. I can't sleep in rollers. Are there any alternatives?
A. Use pin curlers.

Q. Why do some women have bald temples?
A. There are numerous possible causes. One cause is hair being too tight while being braided.

Q. Is it necessary to protect hair while sunbathing?
A. Oh, yes! Pull hair into a pony tail and smooth on a coating of Motions Hairdressing or Moisture Plus Conditioner.

Q. I want my hair to grow. What can I do?
A. Hair grows about one half inch per month; more in the summer and less in the winter. If you would like to help increase that rate, just loosen your scalp, which will increase blood flow to hair follicles. Lay on the couch each evening and hang your head over the side. Massage your scalp daily. Salons have an instrument that uses a slight amount of electricity to help improve blood flow.

Q. My hair is dry and brittle. Is there a simple solution to getting the moisture back into my hair?
A. Moisture is lost through the imbrications (or spaces). The air has less moisture and is constantly pulling moisture molecules from all sources, including your hair. Most of the conditioners that you use are intended to seal those spaces. Use a Motions conditioner every time you wet your hair. Use daily conditioners every day. Use satin pillowcases every night.

Q. What is the best way to care for gray hair without damaging it?
A. Gray hair is usually quite strong. Use Motions Color Return after relaxing gray hair.

Q. Why is gray hair so hard to manage?
A. As one ages, hair structure changes. That ’s just the way it is!

Q. Some people say that black people are not supposed to wash their hair every week because it will dry it out, but my hair does not look and feel it’s best if I don ’t. What should I do?
A. Shampoo regularly. Men can shampoo daily. Women should not shampoo more than every four days unless hair is short. (Water swells hair. Accordingly, if long hair is shampooed too often, one could damage it while it is swollen and weak. Seal it after you wet it.

Q. How often should I cut my split ends?
A. A trim every two months will keep split ends at a minimum. Beyond that, keep the air in your house moisturized by simmering water. Condition ends daily with any Motions hairdressing.

Q. How can I prevent split-ends?
A. Your hair strands split because they have dried out. Keep them sealed by using crème conditioners. Don’t sleep on anything other than satin pillowcases; other materials suck moisture from hair strands. Keep the air moist.

Q. What should my weekly hair care regimen be?
A. Good question, but difficult to answer on this Website. You should find a good stylist and have your hair evaluated.

Q. Does it damage your hair to color over a relaxer?
A. It depends. Consult a colorist or other salon stylist.

Q. I want to let the natural wave pattern of my hair grow out. What can I do in between styles as far as caring for new growth and maintaining my previously relaxed hair?
A. Use a warm (not hot) press comb or curling iron to soften your hair until you can cut away the relaxed ends.

Q. I have gone back to pressing my hair after years of having a relaxer. My hair seems to be drier now than before even though I moisturize and condition. Was this move a mistake?
A. Relaxed hair is traditionally drier than pressed hair, simply because relaxers disturb the cuticular layers, allowing for increased moisture loss. You may be using a comb that is too hot. You should probably consult a professional stylist for evaluation.

Q. Does styling gel and spritzing products dry your hair?
A. Yes. Both products contain drying agents. If they did not, you would have to wait a long time to complete your styling regimen. If you use either, complement with Oil sheen or other moisturizing, softening product.

Q. My hair always looks so beautiful after I walk out of the salon, but after a day or two… I just can’t seem to keep that fresh, new, silky look. What can I do to maintain a just-leaving-the-salon-appearance?
A. The most important factor is the haircut. It must be appropriate for your texture and length. Beyond that, be careful to maintain the correct weight. Don’t use too much or too little daily conditioner or sheen. Learn to roll or curl your hair in the direction of the finished style. (If you comb it to the back; roll it to the back, etc.) Use the correct size roller. (After one and one half wraps around a roller, hair will form into a "S".) Sleep on satin pillowcases. Avoid high-moisture situations. Eat lots of green vegetables to help keep your scalp healthy.

Q. I sweat a lot in my head–are braids my only solution? Is there any advice you can give to help me keep a decent looking head of hair?
A. Sometimes, the avoidance of spices can lessen scalp perspiration. If you do perspire, braids might be your best bet. Beyond that, shampoo often with Motions Lavish shampoo.

Q. My scalp is very sensitive, should I be using a no-lye relaxer or a mild one?
A. Ask your stylist to apply Motions Sensitive Scalp, no-lye relaxer.

Q. Is a no-lye relaxer safe enough for my 3-year-old daughter?
A. Wait until she is five years old.

Q. My 5-year-old daughter has a full head of coarse hair and combing it for school is a task that is almost unbearable. I need help! What age should I begin relaxing my daughter’s hair? Or should I continue conditioning and blow drying it for a few more years?
A. Your professional stylist can begin relaxing your daughter ’s hair at age five.

Q. Can I use setting lotion for wrapping my hair?
A. Yes. Wrap lotions are setting lotions containing additional ingredients designed to allow for more stretching.

Q. I like my hair light and full of body. How can I keep this look in between salon visits?
A. Easy! Use Motions Salon Sheen every morning.

Q. When should I use oil sheen and when should I use hair moisturizer?
A. Your call! Oil sheen is lighter.

Q. Help me with this. Should or shouldn’t black people use hair grease?
A. Black people should apply a conditioner regularly for the purpose of sealing the hair’s cuticle. "Hair grease", as we call it, ranges from very heavy to ultra-light. Pick your weight. Experiment. With Motions.

Q. My hair is breaking. How can I stop it without getting it all cut off?
A. Go to the "how to’s and tips " page on this Website and click on "Hair Breakage".

Q. My hair grows to a certain length and stops. How can I promote growth?
A. Your hair is probably forming split ends. Most hair grows about one half inch per month; more in the summer and less in the winter. If you would like to help increase that rate, just loosen your scalp, which will increase blood flow to hair follicles. Lay on the couch each evening and hang your head over the side. Massage your scalp daily. Salons have an instrument that uses a slight amount of electricity to help improve blood flow.

Q. Does hot curling my hair each day really damage my hair? I use the moisturizing lotion as a protectant and it looks healthy enough.
A. Heat swells hair. The more it swells, the more damaged it can become. Additionally, you are probably helping to dry your ends which leads to split ends. Having said that, if it works for you, do it!

Q. I love your salon sheen product. Is it ok to use this on my hair as a part of my daily care routine?
A. Absolutely.

Q. When wearing my hair in braids, how can I keep my scalp from being so dry?
A. Use a "greasy" oil, such as Motions Hair & Scalp Conditioner.

Q. How do you get those models hair in your ads to look so healthy? Is that a trick of the camera?
A. We blow dry their hair with Motions Blow Dry Lotion and use lots of Motions Salon Sheen!

Q. I like to wear my hair natural but I still want it to look great at all times. What can I use to give it a gloss but at the same time keep it free flowing?
A. Easy. Use Motions Salon Sheen.

Q. How many times a week should I oil my scalp?
A. Put something on your hair every day. Unless you have a scalp problem, oil it once a week.

Q. How often should I get my hair permed?
A. For very course hair, every five to seven weeks. For naturally wavy, every few months. Your stylist knows for sure.

Q. What is the difference between a perm and a relaxer?
A. A relaxer is a permanent wave, or perm.

Q. Do any of your products manage the "frizzies"?
A. Frizzy hair is dry hair. A Hair and Scalp conditioner will usually do the job.

Q. If I use a no-lye relaxer, is it safe for my stylist to color my hair at the same time? If not,how long do I have to wait?
A. Some colors are safe after a relaxer; others are not. (Most semi-permanent colors are okay, but you should consult a colorist.)

Q. Can I use moisturizing lotion on my scalp to help control dandruff?
A. Dandruff is characterized by a bad smell. If your hair has that bad smell, visit a dermatologist. If it does not smell, you are needing dietary advice. Visit a health food store, Napropath or just dive into green, leafy foods.

Q. My hair falls about 12 inches beyond my shoulders and I want to wear my hair in a style something like my Caucasian sisters call permed, falling wavy curls that will stay in even after shampooing. Do you have any products that can help me achieve this look?
A. Wet your hair with Motions Foaming Wrap Lotion. Roll the crown hair with four very large rollers. Wrap the balance. Spray with Salon Sheen as it dries.

Q. I work in the sun all day; I wear a scarf on my head to keep it from being exposed to the heat. I have begun to notice thinning around my edges and think this may be caused by the scarf. What is worse, the scarf or the heat?
A. A satin scarf won’t rub away your edges or absorb moisture from your hair.

Q. Can I color my own hair in between salon visits without damaging my hair?
A. Check out Motions Color Return.

Q. My trips to the beauty shop are getting to be too expensive! Is there anything I can do to cut costs or take care of my own hair economically?

Q. I want soft curls; can I dilute your wrapping lotion to use for this purpose?
A. Sure you can, but it is better to use less.

Q. Is your moisturizer good to use on my husband’s texturizer for daily upkeep?

A. You can, but with a warm comb only. It would be better to use a warm curling iron.

Q. Why is it suggested that only professionals put in our relaxers? It seems easy enough.
A. Hair stylists apply relaxers day in and day out, sometimes for years and years. They know the nuances.

Q. My daughter is going away to camp for 3 weeks. Besides braids what can I do to her hair so it will be easy to maintain.
